Blackpool Sands has a vision for the future, a dream to create a place that will enrich the local community, bolster biodiversity and inspire visitors to the beach to celebrate and support the natural world.
At the back of the east side of this stunning beach is an area of land where beautiful wildflowers grow. BeWild, along with volunteers from the local community, are bolstering this vital vegetation and reintroducing lost species that continue to thrive just along the coast at Slapton Sands.
Imagine a wildflower-rich coastal habitat, teaming with colour and life. With flowering plants such as vipers bugloss, sea campion and wild carrot it will support a huge range of creatures from bees, butterflies, moths and beetles to the amphibians, birds, bats and other mammals that feed on them. Not only will this biodiversity hotspot be fantastic for educational visits, but it will also present a fantastic opportunity for the local community and the many visitors to the beach to engage and connect with nature.
Alongside this exciting venture, local naturalists from The Habitat Group are also keen to extend their Nottingham Catchfly reintroduction project. This delicate, fragrant flower is essential for the survival of the nationally threatened White Spot moth. Its seeds are the larval foodplant of the caterpillars who hide in the stony ground during the day and climb up to feed on the seeds at night.
This ambitious and inspiring project will not only be fantastic for local wildlife, it will also provide a stunning centrepiece that captures the imagination and interest of visitors to Devon and locals alike.
